Adding a venue
Venues are located using two complementary tools: a Google Maps picker and a what3words address. Together they give you both the official, recognised location of a place and a pinpoint-accurate spot for things like the entrance or meeting point.
Add a venue with Google Maps
- Go to Settings → Venues → Create New.
- In the Address search box, start typing the venue's name or address. Suggestions appear as you type, by Google Maps.
- Select the correct result from the list. The map preview will then display the address.
- Confirm the information is correct, then Save.
When you pick a result, we don't just store the text you typed — we store Google's Place ID for that location.
What is a Place ID?
A Place ID is a unique code Google assigns to every place in its database. We keep this code against the venue instead of a plain address. That matters because:
- The venue always resolves to the exact place you chose, even if two places share a similar name or street.
- We can look up fresh details on demand — precise coordinates, the formatted address, and, where Google has them, phone number, website, and opening hours.
- If Google corrects or enriches its data, your venue benefits automatically, with no need to re-enter anything.
In short: the Place ID is a permanent reference to the place itself, not a snapshot of its details.
Add a what3words address (the precise spot)
A street address gets people to the building; what3words gets them to the exact door.
what3words divides the whole world into 3m × 3m squares, each with its own unique three-word label such as ///filled.count.soap. This is ideal for large sites, venues with several entrances, or spots with no clear street address (a field gate, a festival stage, a loading bay).
